Member Responsibility

We want the children to have fun with the toys from our collection, but members are responsible for the toys that they borrow. Whilst we understand that accidents will happen, there may be small fees applied if a toy is damaged, lost or has pieces missing.

Members are responsible for the toys they borrow, this includes:

  • Correct use of toys

  • Choosing age-appropriate toys

  • Taking care with small parts and magnets

  • Not leaving toys outside in the elements

Bronze & Silver members borrowing period = 3 weeks

Gold members borrowing period = 4 weeks

Members are allowed to renew toys once during the loan period to ensure other members have access to the toys.

Please let our co-ordinator know if there are any issues with any toys you have borrowed, so we can keep our collection engaging and safe for your children.

Members are required to return toys cleaned and ready for the next member to borrow. Please see below for our quick guide to cleaning the toys.

Members are responsible for making sure that their children wear helmets whilst using bikes and scooters.

The Toy Library does not provide batteries for toys. It is the borrower's responsibility to provide batteries if required.

Overdue Toys

If a toy is returned late an overdue fee of $1 per toy per week will be charged.  Fees will not be charged for any public holidays or school holidays when the library is closed.  The focus of the Toy Library is to have the toys returned and available for other members, not to make money from fines.

Missing Pieces

Toys need to be returned in the condition that they were borrowed with all pieces intact. Members need to check all pieces before borrowing.

If you are missing pieces, you can re-borrow the toy to locate the missing piece. If you cannot find the missing piece, fines are as follows:

  • $2 per missing piece

  • $10 per missing battery cover

  • Plastic Bags - $5 / Plastic Tubs - up to $20 (depending on size)

  • Replacement cost or item of same brand/value for missing puzzle piece

Missing Puzzle Pieces

A puzzle isn’t as fun with missing pieces! Missing Pieces means we have to remove the puzzle from our collection.  Please help us keep the pizzazz in our puzzle collection by agreeing to our Puzzle Policy.

  1. I will check within 24 hours that my borrowed puzzle has the correct number of pieces. If any pieces are missing, I will email the toy library straight away.

  2. If a piece goes missing during play, I agree to renew the puzzle so I can keep searching for it (it will turn up!)

  3. If I still can’t find it, I agree to pay for the toy library to replace the puzzle, or I will replace it myself with a puzzle of the same brand/value.

  4. I agree to replace the puzzle (or pay for its replacement) before borrowing any more toys.

Damaged Toys

  • We understand that toys are sometimes broken or damaged during the normal course of play.  Please do not attempt to repair damaged toys yourself.

  • Please email the toy library if you notice a toy is broken or is showing signs of wear and tear.

  • If a toy is damaged beyond repair, our committee will decide whether a fine will be charged to the member who damaged the borrowed toy – up to the value of replacement.

  • All toys must be returned with the plastic bag / tub they were borrowed with. The following fines may be charged if they are missing or damaged; Plastic Bags - up to $5.00 and Plastic Tubs - up to $20.00 (depending on size).

Toy Cleaning Guidelines

Wipe the toy thoroughly with a pH neutral detergent, such as diluted dishwashing detergent on a damp dish cloth. You can use something like an old toothbrush or a cotton bud to get into hard to reach places.

Dry the toy or leave to dry overnight. Please make sure the toy is perfectly dry before returning it to its bag or box. Do not submerge toys in water as they can trap water inside them or in the case of wooden toys, they can get too wet to effectively dry.

Special cleaning tips

Baby Rattles

Do not to immerse rattles in water as they collect water which can lead to harmful bacteria developing.  Wipe the surface with a cloth.

Wooden Toys and Train Sets – Wipe over. Allow time to thoroughly dry. These toys should not be immersed or soaked.

Duplo/Lego – Wash well with hot soapy water and a toothbrush.  Rinse and leave to drain overnight.

Bath toys – Please wash after using in the bath and ensure no water remains trapped in the toy.

Outdoor/Sandpit Toys – These must be cleaned well remembering that the next member may wish to use it inside.  Remove all sand and dirt and clean well with hot soapy water.

Board Games and Cardboard Puzzles – Paper-based materials, such as puzzles and games, are not considered a high risk for transmission and do not need additional cleaning or disinfection procedures. Please clean counters and other plastic parts of a game.

Fabric items (Dress-ups/Puppets/Dolls Bedding/Infant Soft Toys) – Hand wash or gentle machine wash with laundry detergent and hang to thoroughly line dry.

Bikes, scooters and other ride-ons – These must be washed, keeping in mind that the next member may wish to use them inside.

Toy storage bags and boxes – Wipe handles and all areas that have been touched, ensuring everything is dry before placing toys back in them.
